Mildred Cosby Barnhart, who would be known throughout her life as Millie, was born in Yonkers, New York in December 1947. When she was five she moved, with her family to Oradell, New Jersey, where she spent the next two decades of her life. After finishing high school Millie attended business school in New York City and began working in the garment industry. Thereafter, she traveled to the West Coast living and working in Seattle, Los Angeles, and at a later date in San Francisco. Millie worked mostly in human resources.
Midcareer Millie moved to Dallas and attended the Dallas Institute of Art and Design receiving an Associate’s degree in interior design. She worked briefly in commercial design.
In 1987 Millie moved to Fripp Island where she helped her husband start an engineering business. Millie was active in Leadership Beaufort and served on the Board of Directors of the Chamber of Commerce. She worked with several local charities including the Franciscan Center, which she helped get established in their first year Millie and her husband Ed were active members of the Fripp Island Club and enjoy life on the island .Most recently Millie and her husband moved into Beaufort, when health and other considerations made it difficult to stay on Fripp Island.
Millie died peacefully in Beaufort Memorial Hospital on May 18, 2016. Millie is preceded in death by her parents John and Mildred Cosby and a brother Thomas Cosby. She is survived by her husband, Edwin Barnhart, a brother John and his wife Judy, a brother Kevin and a sister Pat and her husband Jim. In addition, she has many nieces and nephews.
A celebration of Millie’s life will be held at the Fripp Island Community Center at 2 PM on June 4. Please join us for that celebration.
