Robert J. Camoosa, 86, passed away on July 7, 2026.
Born on March 14, 1940, in Long Island City, New York, he was raised in Asbury Park, New Jersey, where he graduated from Asbury Park High School. He continued his education at Murray State University, earning a Bachelor of Science in Education in 1964. While at Murray State, he was an active member of Tau Kappa Epsilon fraternity and was elected to a fraternity office during his senior year. In 1971, he earned a Master of Education in Administration & Supervision from Monmouth University.
Mr. Camoosa began his career in education in 1964 when he joined the Howell Township Public School District as a mathematics teacher at Ardena School. It was there that he met his future wife, Anne, who was also a teacher. They were married in August 1965. In 1969, he was appointed principal of Ardena School, where he served with distinction until 1974. He was then named principal of Edith M. Griebling School, a position he held until his retirement in 1997. Throughout his career, he was known for his dedication to students, teachers, and the Howell Township school community.
Following his retirement, Mr. Camoosa continued to share his passion for education as a Supervisor of Student Teachers and Adjunct Professor of Education at Georgian Court University. He also returned to Howell Township to serve as Interim Assistant Superintendent of Schools. He was a member of the National Education Association, the New Jersey Education Association, the American Association of School Administrators, the Howell Township Administrative Council, and Phi Delta Kappa, a professional education honor society.
Mr. Camoosa and his wife made their home in Toms River, New Jersey, before building their dream home on Fripp Island, South Carolina, where they became permanent residents in 2008. They spent many happy years enjoying the beach, welcoming family visits, and embracing the island lifestyle. An avid golfer and fisherman, he loved spending time outdoors and found great joy in nature. Mr. Camoosa was a member of St. Peter’s Catholic Church, Lady’s Island, South Carolina.
Mr. Camoosa was predeceased by his beloved wife, Anne, who passed away in June 2015; his parents, Eugene and Hazel Camoosa of Asbury Park, New Jersey; and his brother, Gene of Peachtree City, Georgia.
He is survived by his son, Keith, and daughter-in-law, Lidia; and by his cherished grandchildren, Sebastian and Charles. He will be remembered for his lifelong commitment to education, his love of family, and the kindness and integrity with which he lived his life.
