Melissa Susan Attaway, 67, passed away peacefully on June 29, 2026, in Beaufort, South Carolina, surrounded by the love of her family, neighbors and lifelong memories.

Born on February 11, 1959, Melissa grew up in Lake City, Florida. She was the youngest daughter of the late Dr. Herbert B Attaway, Jr., former Dean of the Forest Ranger School at Lake City Community College, and the late Dorothy "Dot" F. Lindsey Attaway.

Melissa attended local schools in Lake City before earning her degree in art from Florida State University, where she cultivated a lifelong passion for creativity, music, and design. A vibrant and spirited person, Melissa was known by all who loved her for her infectious sense of humor and unmatched knack for storytelling. She was a true rock 'n' roll enthusiast and an absolute whiz at music trivia - rarely beaten when it came to rock 'n' roll facts. She loved nothing more than dancing, laughing, and spending quality time surrounded by dear friends and family. Over the years, she also poured her generous heart into caring for her cherished pets, including her beloved cats and her sweet dog.

Melissa is survived by her sister, Dorothy Patricia Attaway of Tryon, NC, and her nephew and nieces: Daniel Helmuth of Augustine Fla., Elizabet Brown of Indiatlantic Beach, Fla. and Caroline Helmuth of Charlotte, NC. She also behind a large , fond extended family of cousins, as well as many close friends who will miss her quick wit and bright presence.

A graveside celebration of Melissa's life will be held on Saturday, August 22, 2026 at 10 am at the Churchyard beside Saint Helena's Episcopal Church in Beaufort, SC.
