Obituary

Charles “Charlie” Andrew Hermanson, 87, passed away peacefully on August 19, 2026, in Beaufort, South

Carolina, after a prolonged illness.

Born in Stratford, Connecticut, Charlie was the son of Eric and Anna Hermanson. He grew up in Stratford

and always remained proud of his Connecticut roots throughout his life.

Charlie was a man known for his kindness, generosity, and strong moral character. He lived his life with a

strong sense of purpose, faith, and devotion to others. He was deeply patriotic and proudly served in the

United States Army Armored Division following high school. His commitment to service continued

throughout his life and was reflected in both his career and the way he cared for others.

Following his military service, Charlie began what would become a 30-year career with the United States

Postal Service. Throughout his career, he held a number of positions and took great pride in serving his

community. He ultimately retired as Postmaster of the Botsford, Connecticut, Post Office.

Outside of work, Charlie had a passion for woodworking and collecting antique tools. He was known by

family and friends as someone who could fix just about anything. He had a strong love for the outdoors,

particularly the New England coastline. He enjoyed fishing and hunting and was an avid collector of

sporting equipment.

Charlie was a longtime member of the Knights of Columbus in Portland, Connecticut, an organization that

reflected many of the values he held dear.

But more than any hobby or accomplishment, Charlie’s greatest joy was his family. He cherished the time he

spent with his wife, MaryAnne, his children, and his grandchildren. He remained very close to his older

brother and sister and always put family first, above all else in life.

Charlie is survived by his beloved wife, MaryAnne Hermanson; his daughter, Karla DiDonato and her

husband, Jeff DiDonato; and his son, Eric Hermanson and his wife, Karen Hermanson. He was a proud

grandfather to five beloved grandchildren: Ryan DiDonato, Cameron DiDonato, Andrew Hermanson, Alex

Hermanson, and Paige Hermanson. His grandchildren brought him tremendous joy, and he cherished the

time he spent with each of them.

In lieu of flowers, the family kindly asks that donations be made to the Knights of Columbus in Portland,

Connecticut, in Charlie’s memory. Please contact the Parish Office at office@stmaryportlandct.org.
